Overview
There is a stationary front stretched through the Southeast US, bringing a risk for severe weather to some. An area of high pressure is affecting parts of the Ohio River valley and Northeast US. A low pressure system over the Great Lakes region has a cold front stretched into the Central Plains where a couple more lows are developing. Over the Northern Plains, a broad ridge of high pressure is bringing more sunshine.

Discussion
Today, skies cleared out and temps stayed slightly below average for this time of the year. It was very pleasant across the state with mostly sunny skies. More light clouds began to roll into the area as the sun was setting. It feels pleasant this evening and skies are mostly clear to partly cloudy with light winds. Temperatures topped out in the 60s & 70s across most of the state. A few cities had highs in the lower 80s. Bismarck& Mandan got to 74 with a low of 59. In Dickinson, it was just as pleasant with a high of 74 and a low of 49.

A ridge of high pressure over the Northern Plains will gradually drift East, eventually giving way to a front that is stretched (North to South), through Montana & Wyoming. A low pressure system will begin to develop along this stalled front. By this weekend, we will see a warm front move across the Dakotas, followed by a cold front. These back-to-back fronts will not be fully developed. We will see scattered showers & thunderstorms this weekend with off/on rain chances through the event. At this time, the risk for severe weather will be low. Nevertheless, some of these storms may become strong. We will not see one major feature that moves through the area. So, if you are planning on celebrating this 4th of July weekend outdoors, keep an eye on the radar and be weather aware.

Headlines include a slightly active weather pattern. Clouds will come and go through Friday with scattered showers & thunderstorms as we wrap up the work week and go into the weekend. Temperatures will be in a pleasant range before warming into the 80s this weekend.

Through the rest of tonight & Friday
Expect pleasant conditions through most of tonight. It will be a little cool with light winds, continuing to swing around to the southeast. After Midnight, we will see gradually increasing clouds. Tomorrow, a weak front will slowly move over our area. This will bring a chance for showers & thunderstorms, before rain chances start to taper off. Off/on rain chances will continue Saturday night, as well. Highs will be slightly warmer than today.

7day planner
In the wake of yesterday's cold front, a ridge of high pressure has moved over the Dakotas. Temperatures will remain a little cooler and slightly below average through the end of the work week. There will also be plenty of sunshine and a light breeze and high temperatures will be in the 70s. This high pressure will linger over our area before moving East as it gives way to an approaching warm front. Friday night through Sunday night, we will see off/on rain chances with showers & thunderstorms possible. A weak front will move through the area, Sunday night & Monday morning. The beginning of the work week will bring more sunshine and temperatures that will warm through the 80s & to either side of 90.

Overview
There is a low pressure over Wyoming with a stationary front stretched SE, into the Southern Plains and across the Southeast US. A broad ridge of high pressure is over the Ohio River valley and Great Lakes region. A Canadian cold front is moving through the Northern Plains from the North to the South and will fizzle out, tonight.

Discussion
We started out the day with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. This afternoon and through the past several hours, showers & thunderstorms developed and moved through the state. Some of these storms did producing hail, strong winds and frequent lightning, but no warnings were issued in our area. It feels pleasant right now and skies are mostly clear to partly cloudy skies with light winds and scattered rain. Temps topped out in the 70s & 80s across most of the state. Bismarck & Mandan got to 84 with a low of 55. In Dickinson, it was just as warm with a high of 82 and a low of 55.

A slow moving cold front is passing across the state. This system is going to bring a change up to our forecast through the rest of the week. In the wake of this front, dew points and temperatures will fall. The muggy feel that we have been experiencing will not be a problem and temps will top out in a comfortable & slightly below average range (bis avg 55/81), through the rest of the work week. A ridge of high pressure will slide across the Northern Plains and this will lead us to mostly clear skies with in & out cover until our next front approaches the area, Friday night & Saturday.

Headlines include showers & thunderstorms that will have a low risk of becoming severe. In the wake of this passing cold front, skies will clear out and temperatures will fall slightly with highs in the 70s as we wrap up the work week.

Through the rest of tonight & Thursday
A few thunderstorms will dissipate and we could see a couple areas of light showers linger over parts of the area. Temperatures will fall into the 50s with a pleasantly cool feel. Winds will be light and continue to swing around to the North. Tomorrow will bring clearing skies with slightly cooler temperatures and a light breeze across Western & Central ND.

7day planner
In the wake of this cold front, temps will fall into the 40s& 50s for lows with 70s for highs. This means that the latter half of our work week will be pleasant with plenty of sunshine and low rain chances. By Friday night, our next low pressure system will approach the area. This system will bring off/on rain chances Saturday through Sunday night as a warm front then a cold front moves through the area. Highs will be in the 80s and the beginning of the work week will bring more sunshine.

Tonight, there will be a chance for scattered showers & thunderstorms. Rain chances will taper off by Midnight and winds will pick up a bit. Lows in the 50s & on either side of 60 with a North/East wind 2-12mph, becoming light at times. 30% chance for rain.

Thursday, we will see plenty of sunshine with in & out clouds and slightly cooler temperatures in the wake of a cold front. Highs in the 70s with a NE wind 5-15mph.

Thursday night will bring mostly clear skies and a pleasantly cool feel. Lows on either side of 50 with a NE/SE wind 5-15mph.

Tuesday's Weather Blog

9:00pm

Overview
There is a broad ridge of high pressure over the Midwest that stretches into the plains and extends across the Great Lakes region and Ohio River valley. A low pressure system is over the Virginias with a cold front stretched through the Southeast U.S. and back into the Central Plains where another low continues to develop. This second low pressure system is bringing a likely chance for rain and a risk for severe weather to parts of South Dakota.

Discussion
It has felt pleasant all day with mostly clear skies & light winds. Temps topped out in the 70s & 80s across the state. Bismarck& Mandan got to 83 with a low of 48. In Dickinson, it was not as warm with a high of 79 and a low of 50. the warm area on the map was Southwest ND. Baker& Buffalo reached 89.
Our next significant weather feature will be a cold front, tomorrow. Through the morning & afternoon hours, temperatures will climb through a pleasant range and into the 80s again. Through the afternoon & evening hours, a cold front will move through the state from the north to the south.
A Marginal risk for severe weather means that Isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible. These storms will be limited in duration and/or coverage/intensity. If any of the thunderstorms reach severe criteria, they will be at the threshold and should not become long-track storms. Winds are expected to peak at 40-60mph with hail possibly up to 1” and there will be a very low tornado risk. The timing of this system will be Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, With scattered thunderstorms possible. Because of the low confidence and scattered nature of this system, we will keep everyone updated. Tomorrow will bring an early chance for showers & a few thunderstorms with in & out clouds. After Noon, a weak- Canadian cold front will move North to South through the state.

Headlines continues pleasant conditions this evening and into tonight. Changes are ahead. We will see in & out clouds before a cold front moves through the area Wednesday. This weak system will bring a chance for showers & thunderstorms and a low risk for severe weather.

Through the rest of tonight & Wednesday
Tonight will bring pleasant conditions with more clouds and a chance for scattered rain & a few thunderstorms for parts of Southwest ND. Northwest ND will see a few showers with statewide temps falling into the 50s and it will be a little cool as winds become light. Tuesday, a cold front will bring scattered showers & thunderstorms with a low risk for severe weather and gusty winds for some.

7day planner
We are still under the influence of a ridge of high pressure. This high is centered over the Midwest & slowly moving East & SE, away from the Dakotas. During the next couple of days, it will give way to an approaching (Canadian) cold front. This front will move through our area Wednesday with rising chances for showers & thunderstorms (afternoon & evening hours) after substantial daytime heating. Rain chances from this weak system will be scattered and there will be a low chance for isolated storms to become severe.

Tonight, expect increasing clouds, followed by a chance for scattered AM showers & a few thunderstorms. Lows will be in the 50s with a few 60s and SE winds 2-10mph will become light after Midnight. 20% chance for rain.

Wednesday will bring with it, partly cloudy skies with continued a chance for scattered showers & thunderstorms (mainly after Noon). Highs will be in the 80s for the most part and light winds will be out of the East/North 2-10mph. 40% chance for rain.

Wednesday night, there will be a slight chance for scattered rain (tapering off) with winds picking up a bit. Lows in the 50s & on either side of 60 with a North/East wind 2-12mph, becoming light at times. 30% chance for rain.

Thursday, we will see mostly sunny skies with in & out clouds and slightly cooler temperatures in the wake of a cold front. Highs in the 70s with a NE wind 5-15mph.

Thursday night will bring mostly clear skies and a pleasantly cool feel. Lows on either side of 50 with a NE/SE wind 5-15mph.

24 hour rainfall model guidance (4km_RPM)

Thursday's Weather Blog

9:30pm

Overview
There is a low pressure system over the Ohio River valley with a warm front stretched to the Mid- Atlantic coastline and a cold front stretched West, into the Central Plains. A broad ridge of high pressure is bringing sunshine & pleasant conditions to much of the Midwest, Great Lakes region & Northern Plains. Another low pressure system is developing on the lee side of the Rockies, over Montana. This will be our next weather maker for Western & Central ND.

Discussion
Today we saw sunny skies with only a few clouds moving through our area. Overnight, a warm front will move through the Dakotas, bringing a chance for scattered showers & thunderstorms. A couple of tonight's cells may produce some hail, but widespread severe weather is not expected. Friday, temperatures will climb (well above the seasonable norm) into the 90s for some and it will start to feel a little humid. There will be a chance for scattered showers & thunderstorms through the afternoon and overnight as a cold front moves through the area. The latest model guidance has moved the strongest storms north, before redeveloping to our East. Nevertheless, I am keeping a chance for scattered rain & storms in the planner for all of Western & Central North Dakota. There will be a slight risk for severe weather with this system.

This means that there will be a chance for strong, scattered thunderstorms. Short- lived and/or not widespread storms may become intense and 1 or 2 tornadoes will be possible. With storms that become severe, we can expect reports of strong wind damage. Hail around 1” will be possible with the occasional 2” stone not out of the question.

Showers & thunderstorms associated with this front could skip over much of our area. That being said, if anything does start to develop they may become strong & even severe quickly. After the cold front moves out of our area, it will get windy with some areas seeing strong winds that may be close to advisory criteria.

After this system moves out of our region, daily highs will fall to either side of 80 with more sunshine, and winds calming down by the beginning of the work week. Rain chances will return during the mid-week with temps beginning to climb, again.
Headlines include plenty of sunshine under a ridge of high pressure before more clouds roll in. Temperatures will be hot tomorrow and we will see rising rain chances, Friday. Our next cold front will bring a risk for severe weather.

Through the rest of tonight & Friday
Skies will stay mostly clear with a light to moderate wind. Temperatures will fall to either side of 60 with a few showers & thunderstorms. Early tomorrow, we will begin to see more clouds rolling in with temperatures climbing through the 80s and well into the 90s for many of us. There will be a chance for showers & thunderstorms that may become severe, Friday afternoon & overnight.

7day planner
We will wrap the work week with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. It will be hot with some temps in the 90s and scattered rain& storms with a slight risk for severe weather Friday & into Saturday. Saturday & Sunday will bring strong winds. In the wake of a passing front, daily highs will fall to either side of 80 with more sunshine & winds calming down by the beginning of the work week. Rain chances will return during the mid-week with temps beginning to climb, again.

Tonight, we will see mostly clear skies with temps on either side of 60 and a light to moderate wind out of the SE, 5-15 mph.

Friday will bring with it more sunshine and some light cloud cover, early. It will become hot followed by more clouds and chances for scattered showers & thunderstorms. There will be a risk for severe weather with some of these storms. Highs will be in the 90s with a SE/South wind 5-15mph G20 and Heat Index values 95-100. 30% chance for rain.

Friday night, expect increasing clouds, rising chances for showers & thunderstorms and a slight risk for severe weather. Lows in the 60s southerly winds swinging around to the NW 5-15mph G20. Some of the thunderstorms may become severe. 30% chance for rain.

Saturday, we will see mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with some scattered rain & thunderstorms. In the wake of a passing front, winds will pick up with seasonable temps. Highs on either side of 80 with a NW/West wind 15-25mph G35.

Saturday night, expect fair to partly cloudy skies with a pleasant feel and continued breezy conditions. Lows near 60 with a West/NW wind 10-20mph G35.

Wednesday's Weather Blog

10:00pm

Overview
A low pressure system is over the Central Plains & Midwest. This system will continue to move East & SE, away from the Dakotas. Through the Ohio River valley & Great Lakes region, there is a slight risk for severe weather with a chance for flash flooding. A ridge of high pressure will build in the wake of this system.

Discussion
Across the area we have been seeing partly to mostly cloudy skies with very little rain on radar for most of the state. Cloud cover is continuing to thin out and the little bit of rain that lingered on radar is moving away from our area. Daytime highs ranged from the lower 60s to 90 degrees. Sidney, MT was the warm spot on the map. Temps were slightly below the seasonal average. In Bismarck and Mandan there was a high of 73 with a low of 59. In Dickinson the high was 71 and the low was 50.

During the 24-36 hours, a ridge of high pressure will build over the Dakotas. This will lead to extremely low rain chances until our next system develops and moves into the area. We will see plenty of sunshine with a few in & out clouds tonight through early Friday. During this time a low pressure system will develop over the Pacific- Northwest and move across the Rockies. This same system will re-develop on the lee side of the Rockies, before moving through our area. By early Friday, we will start to see increasing clouds. This cloud cover will come and go through the day with a few scattered showers & thunderstorms possible. Friday night, this low pressure system will move through Western & Central North Dakota. Due to Friday's daytime heating, the environment over our area will become conducive for thunderstorm activity and it will be very unstable. The higher temperatures climb on Friday, the more significant thunderstorm development is expected. If everything lines up just right, we may be looking at the potential for another severe weather outbreak.
Latest Model Run for Friday 6/24

Storm Prediction Center (SPC) outlook for Friday

In the wake of this next system and our next chance for severe weather, winds will pick up and become strong with continued chances for showers & thunderstorms through the day on Saturday. Sunday, the chance for showers & thunderstorms will start to taper off (south to north) as the low pressure system moves into Canada and away from the Dakotas. After Friday night's front, temps will fall into a more seasonable range while winds become strong. Upper 70s and lower 80s will be expected through the beginning of the work week.

Headlines include plenty of sunshine under a ridge of high pressure. We will see clearing skies tonight, through early Thursday. Temperatures will warm through a seasonable range, becoming hot on Friday. Our next chance for rain & storms will start up as we close out the work week.

Through the rest of tonight & Thursday
We will continue to see clearing skies with wind speeds tapering off. Temperatures will fall back to either side of 50. Before winds calm down, it will be breezy with gusts near 25mph possible. Thursday will bring plenty of sunshine with temperatures warming into a seasonable & pleasantly warm range. Highs will be near 80 with winds swinging around to the SE. Tomorrow will shape up to be a very nice day.
