Monday's Weather Blog

9:00pm

A Heat advisory is in effect for the following counties:
Burleigh, Ward, Emmons, Kidder, Sioux, Grant, Morton, Oliver, Mercer, McLean, Sheridan, McHenry, Renville & Botineau.
Central North Dakota will be under a heat advisory from 1pm to 8pm cdt. Temperatures will be in the 90s and it will feel like it is on either side of 100. A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures & high humidity values will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives & neighbors.

Overview
There is a broad area of high pressure over the Great Lakes region that is stretched through the Midwest and over the Northern Plains. A low pressure system is developing over Eastern Montana and on the lee side of the Rockies. A second low is North of New England with a cold front stretched West through the Ohio River valley and into the Central Plains. A second ridge of high pressure is over parts of the Southeast U.S.

Discussion
Across North Dakota, we are seeing mostly clear skies with a few in and out clouds as the sun sets. There is no rain on radar and rain chances will stay low during the next couple of days. High temperatures climbed through the 80s and into the 90s for the most part. The hot spot on the map was Buffalo (96) and the cool spot was Devils Lake (79). Bismarck/Mandan got up to 86 with a low last night of 55. Temperatures were right on target for this time of the year. In Dickinson, the high was also 86 with a low of 54.

The Dakotas will remain partially under the influence of a broad ridge of high pressure to our East. Mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies will be coupled with warmer air rolling into place. Through the next few days, temperatures will top out in the 90s and on either side of 100 before significant rain chances come back into play. This next system will approach the area as we wrap up the work week. Until then, daily rain chances will be in the forecast, but any showers & thunderstorms will be hit & miss and most of the area will not get wet. With temperatures climbing into the 90s& past the triple digit marker and SE winds bringing more moisture into the environment, it will become hot & humid. Heat index values will be 5-10 degrees warmer than actual temperatures and it will feel like it is between 95-105 for much of the area.

Headlines include warming temperatures and a light breeze. Tomorrow, there will be a Heat Advisory through the afternoon & evening. Rain chances will stay low with only a few isolated showers/storms for parts of our area. During the next couple of days, we will see plenty of sunshine with only a few in & out clouds.

Through the rest of tonight & Tuesday
Hour by hour, expect rain chances to stay low with a few isolated showers possible overnight and mostly clear skies. Winds will become light and it will feel mild with temps dropping into the 60s. Tomorrow, it will warm well into the 90s with a hot & humid feel through the middle of the work week. Winds will be light to moderate and out of the South & East, becoming a little gusty at times.

7day planner
It will be hot with higher dew points and it will feel a little muggier. During this potential 3-day heat wave, it may feel 5-10 degrees warmer than it actually is. So, heat index values will top out past the triple digit marker in most of our area. There will be daily rain chances that will remain low. Nevertheless, hit & miss showers with a few thunderstorms will be possible. All of us will not get wet, but do not be surprised if there is passing areas of rain for some. This hot & humid trend will be interrupted by our next system that is expected to roll through the area as we wrap up the work week & go into the weekend.

Tonight, fair to partly cloudy skies with in & out cover for some and a mild feel. Lows will be in the 60s with winds out of the southeast, becoming light at 2-12 mph.

Tuesday, expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with in and out clouds and temps climbing well above average for this time of the year. There will be a slight chance for hit & miss rain. It will be hot with highs in the 90s and near 100 for some and a SE/South wind 5-15mph G20. Heat index values 90-100.

Tuesday Night, expect a muggy feel with fair to partly cloudy skies. Lows will be in the 60s with a South/East wind 2-10mph.

Wednesday, we will see mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, it will feel hot & humid and there will be a slight chance for showers& a few thunderstorms. Highs will be in the 90s and on either side of 100 with a SE wind 5-15mph. Heat index values  95-105 with a 20% chance for rain.

Wednesday night, fair to partly cloudy skies with rain chances ending and a muggy feel. Lows will be in the 60s with a SE/NW wind 2-12mph.

Friday's Weather Blog

9:00pm

Overview
There is a low pressure system over the Great Lakes region. A cold front is stretched through the Ohio River valley and into the Southern Plains. This system is producing a risk for severe weather for affected areas. There is a ridge of high pressure over the Gulf of Mexico. A second ridge of high pressure is over the Midwest and extends over the Northern & Central Plains. A second low pressure system is developing over the East Montana/Wyoming border.

Discussion
A ridge of high pressure is over the Midwest & Great Lakes region. The western edge of this high is extended over the Northern Plains. This ridging will slowly give way to an approaching low pressure system. A low that is developing on the lee side of the Rockies will continue to organize over the Northern Plains, before moving West to East through the Dakotas. Tonight, a warm front will move through the area, after midnight. Along this front, expect scattered showers & thunderstorms. Rain chances will be hit & miss and continue through the morning hours.

Through the weekend, this system will gradually move East. In Central & Western North Dakota, we will see several waves of rain & storms. After the warm front moves through our area, we will clearing skies followed by a hotter air mass moving over the Dakotas. This means a couple of things for us. Expect it to feel muggy with temps topping out on either side of 90 (Sat) and even warmer by Sunday. The weekend will bring heat index values to either side of 100, for some. Stay hydrated, use sun screen and if you get tired, seek the shade.

Aside from unseasonably warm temps, winds will swing around to the South & Southeast. This will set up the environment to fuel thunderstorm development. Saturday& Sunday, showers & thunderstorms will move through the state with extended periods of down-time (during the day) between waves of activity. Through the weekend, there will be a risk for severe weather. A low/slight risk, Saturday & a slight risk on Sunday.

Scattered severe thunderstorms will be possible. Short- lived/not wide spread & intense storms may occur. Potential hazards include but are not limited to: 1 or 2 tornadoes, reports of strong wind/wind damage & hail around 1" with isolated reports of 2" stones.
In-house model output for Sunday evening thunderstorms (4km_RPM)

Short- term headlines include a little break from an active weather pattern. Expect in & out clouds tonight, and Saturday. A warm front tonight will bring a chance for scattered rain. Saturday & Sunday it will be hot & humid with a chance or more thunderstorms. The weather environment will be primed for scattered thunderstorms to continue to strengthen and possibly become severe.

Through the rest of tonight & this weekend
Tonight, we will see a chance for scattered rain & a few storms with a warm front. Tomorrow & Sunday will be hot & humid. Temps climb well into the 90s and to either side of 100 by Sunday with peak heat index values ranging from 95-105 through the weekend. There will be a chance for rain & storms with a low risk for severe weather, through the weekend. Also, winds will become breezy at times.

7day planner
This weekend a low pressure system will approach our area late Saturday and move through the Dakotas Sunday & Monday. We will see daily rain chances with a risk for severe weather. In the wake of our next chance for rain expect clearing skies (Tuesday night), cooler temps (upper 70s and lower 80s), breezy winds (through Wednesday) & more sunshine. By the end of the work week, another chance for rain is in the forecast.

Tonight, we will see fair to partly cloudy skies with in& out clouds. There will be a few hit & miss showers/storms as a warm front moves through our area, after Midnight. Lows will be on either side of 60 with a light E/SE wind 2-12mph.

Saturday, expect mostly sunny skies with in & out cover and winds becoming breezy for some. In advance of our next system, there will be a few late showers & thunderstorms (West). It will be hot & humid with highs in the 80s & 90s and a SE wind 10-20mph G30. Heat index values 95-100.

Saturday night will bring with it, partly to mostly cloudy skies with in & out cover, a muggy feel and scattered showers & thunderstorms. Lows in the 60s with a SE wind 5-15mph G20.

Sunday, expect another hot & humid day with mostly sunny skies at times. Showers & thunderstorms will develop and increase with a risk for severe weather. Highs in the 90s with a moderate SE/West wind 10-20mph G30. Heat index values 100-105.

Sunday night will bring partly to mostly cloudy skies with continued scattered rain & storms possible. Lows will be in the 60s & 70s with a SE/W winds 10-20mph G30 and a muggy feel.

Monday's Weather Blog on Independence Day 2016

9:00pm

Overview
There is a low pressure system over the Ohio River valley with an associated front bringing a risk for severe weather and possible flash flooding to affected areas. A ridge of high pressure over the Southwest US& Southern Plains is stretched into the Midwest. Another low pressure system and cold front is moving through the Northern Plains.

Discussion
Today, we saw plenty of sunshine and temperatures climbed well above average for this time of the year. It feels pleasant this evening and skies are mostly clear to partly cloudy with light winds, scattered rain& a few storms for parts of Southwest ND. Earlier, some severe storms moved through parts of Central & Eastern North Dakota. Temps topped out in the 80s & 90s for the most part. The warm spot on the map was Mobridge at 99. Buffalo & Hettinger both got up to 95 as well.  Bismarck & Mandan reached 94 with a low of 60. In Dickinson, it was not as hot with a high of 90 and a low of 58.

A low pressure system and cold front is over the Northern Plains with another low developing on the lee side of the Rockies. A fairly active weather pattern is setting up for the Dakotas, this week. Tonight through early Tuesday, a slow moving system will move through North Dakota. A low pressure system that is over British Columbia will continue to develop and move toward our area. Because of this developing system, daily rain chances will pick back up for parts of the state.
In-house model run (4km RPM) showing rain & storms early Tuesday

Showers & thunderstorms will be off/on through Thursday night. The highest chances for widespread rain will be Wednesday and Thursday. This means that much needed rainfall will be on the way. The good news is the risk for strong thunderstorms and severe weather lower during this time because of a front that will stall out to our South. The set up this week will lead to off/on chances for showers & thunderstorms, cooler temperatures, and winds becoming breezy at times. It looks like rain chances will dry up a little by Friday. However, another system may move into our area as we go into the weekend.
Short-term headlines include a slightly active weather pattern. Clouds will come and go through the next couple of days with scattered showers & thunderstorms. Temperatures will be slightly cooler than what we saw today, with higher rain chances.

Through the rest of tonight & Tuesday
Tonight, we will see in & out clouds with scattered showers for some and more thunderstorm activity developing after Midnight. Scattered rain & storms will move through parts of our area during the morning hours. Later in the day we will see clearing skies, more sunshine and warm temperatures. Lows will be on either side of 60 with wind calming down as they swing around to the NW & North. Tomorrow, temperatures will not be as hot & top out in the 80s with a light to moderate wind out of the North/NW.

7day planner
The next couple of days will not be as hot and showers & thunderstorms will become a little more widespread by Wednesday & Thursday. By the mid week, our risk for severe weather will not be as high. Through the rest of the work week, rain chances will start to wrap up, Thursday night. As we close out the work week and go into the weekend, expect more sunshine with temps climbing through the 80s & short-lived lower rain chances.

Tonight, expect fair to partly cloudy skies with scattered rain tapering off and a low risk for severe weather. Lows will be on either side of 60 with a NW/N wind 5-15mph, before wind speeds begin to taper off. 30% chance for rain.

Tuesday, mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with in & out cover and scattered showers & thunderstorms possible. Highs will be in the 80s with a North/NW wind 2-12mph. 40% chance for rain.

Tuesday night, fair to partly cloudy skies with a pleasant feel and light winds. Lows in the 50s with a few 60s and a NE/SW wind 1-8mph.

Wednesday, expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with in& out clouds and a good chance for scattered showers & thunderstorms. Highs will be on either side of 80 with a SW/NE wind 2-12mph. 40% chance for rain.

Wednesday night, well bring continued rain chances. Showers& thunderstorms will be hit & miss before fizzling out. Lows will be in the 50s with an East wind 2-10mph G15.

Friday's Weather Blog

9:00pm

Overview
There is a broad ridge of high pressure that is anchored over the upper- Midwest & Great Lakes region. A low pressure system over Canada has a cold front stretched south into the Southeast US & Southern Plains. A second low is over the Northern Plains with a stationary front stretched North to South along the lee side of the Rockies. Another stationary front (over the Atlantic coastline) is bringing a risk for severe weather to some areas.

Discussion
Today, after rain moved through the area, skies cleared out and temps stayed below average for this time of the year. It quickly became very pleasant (and even a little cool) across the state with mostly sunny skies. It feels pleasant this evening and skies are mostly clear to partly cloudy with light winds and scattered rain just outside of our area. Temps topped out in the 60s & 70s across most of North Dakota with a few cities in the lower 80s on the western side of our area. Bismarck & Mandan got to 71 with a low of 44. In Dickinson, it was a little warmer with a high of 76 and a low of 47.

There is a low pressure system over Central & East Montana with a stationary front that is slowly moving through the Dakotas. This system will move back & forth across our state during the next couple of days, until a slightly stronger cold front moves through and pushes this first system out of the Dakotas. Some of the thunderstorms that move through our area may become strong Saturday night in Western & Northwest ND. There will be another round of thunderstorm development Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning.
Thunderstorms will have a low risk for severe weather Saturday night

As this system affects our area, there will be a Marginal (low) risk for severe weather with some of these storms. Saturday evening until just after midnight, a low risk for severe will be along the western edge of our area and into Northwest ND. Sunday afternoon into Sunday night, the low risk for severe weather will be in Western ND and parts of Central ND as a final cold front moves though the state. In the wake of Sunday night/Monday morning's cold front, expect some clearing with more sunshine and highs on either side of 90 for the beginning of the work week.
A line of scattered storms with a low risk for severe weather Sunday night (4km_RPM)

Headlines include a slightly active weather pattern. Clouds will come and go through the weekend with scattered showers & thunderstorms. Temperatures will be in a pleasant range before warming into the 80s Saturday & Sunday. By the beginning of the work week, it will be near 90.

Through the rest of tonight & This Weekend
Tonight we will see fair to partly cloudy skies across most of Western & Central ND. Around Midnight, a few showers & thunderstorms will be possible in North- Central ND and parts of Eastern ND. Through the weekend, expect in & out clouds with off/on rain chances. The chance for showers & thunderstorms will become good, both Saturday night & Sunday afternoon-night. Both rounds of thunderstorm activity will bring low risks for severe weather.

7day planner
Showers & thunderstorms have been moving through the state today and most us have gotten wet. This line of rain is starting to fizzle out and thunderstorms are dissipating. Hour by hour we will see mostly clear to partly cloudy skies across the area. During the early morning hours, showers & thunderstorms will affect North Central & Northeast ND. Scattered rain will continue through the weekend as daytime highs climb through the 80s. In the wake of a front Sunday night/Monday morning, we will not see cooler temps. In fact, it will be hot Monday & Tuesday with highs on either side of 90. Daily rain chances will continue though the work week with highs in the 80s before another cold front at the end of next week.

Tonight, we will see in & out clouds with scattered showers & a few thunderstorms as a front slowly moves across the Dakotas. Lows will be in the 50s with a SE/South wind 2-12mph. 30% chance for rain.

Saturday, mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with in & out cloud cover. Temperatures will be slightly warmer and seasonable with off/on rain chances. Highs in the 80s with a few 70s and a South wind 5-15mph G20. 30% chance for rain.

Saturday night will bring continued, scattered rain chances with partly cloudy skies, in & out clouds and a mild feel. Lows on either side of 60 with a South wind 2-12mph G20.

Sunday night, partly to mostly cloudy skies with a good chance for scattered rain and hit & miss storms. There will be a low risk for severe weather as a weak cold front moves through the state. Lows in the 60s with a South/North wind 5-15mph G20 and calming. 50% chance for rain.
