Monday's Weather Blog

11:30pm

Overview
There is a low pressure system over the NE US & Great Lakes region. A cold front is stretched though the Midwest and into the Central Plains. Over the Southern Plains, a developing low will move through the lower- Mississippi River valley and SE US with a risk for severe weather. Closer to home there is a weak low over the Northern & Central plains that will move SE and into the Midwest & Mississippi River valley.

Discussion
A low pressure system will continue to move SE and out of the Dakotas. This low has been bringing scattered light snow to much of North Dakota, today. Little to no accumulation is expected. We will see tapering snow chances tonight with only a few flurries, after Midnight. Tuesday we will see in & out clouds and slightly warmer temps. Through Thursday, we will not see much movement in daytime highs. However, Wednesday & Wednesday night scattered light snow will move through our area. Less than one inch is expected for most of Western ND with 1"-2" possible for some.
In house model guidance (4km RPM) 48hr snowfall accumulation

Wednesday morning, we will begin to see rising chances for rain/mix. As this system moves further through the Dakotas, mix will become snow. Temperatures at the surface will be well above freezing through the day. This means that most of our area will see rain/mix until temps start to cool through the evening. Most of this system will move through our area while temps are too warm to support accumulating snow. By the time it cools down enough we will be on the down-hill side of the event with tapering snow chances and lingering flurries through Wednesday night. Some of the models are pointing to scattered mix on Thursday, before skies begin to clear. In the wake of passing system, it will become breezy Friday with plenty of sunshine through the weekend. By the end of the work week we will see mild temperatures return to the forecast with a relatively quiet weather pattern.

Through the rest of tonight & Tuesday
Expect cloudy skies with tapering snow chances and some clearing through the morning hours. Though we will see a little more cooling tonight, winds will be calming as well. Temperatures will stay in the teens with chills on either side of zero. Grab your coat on the way out the door tomorrow, but know that we will see some warming with temps climbing above freezing around Noon. Highs will range from the mid to upper 30s and into the lower 40s with increasing clouds late.

7day planner
The 7 day planner shows cool air mass over the area to start off our work week. Slightly warmer temps will return to the forecast and stay on either side of 40 during the next couple of days. This mid week system will be our next chance for scattered mix/snow, followed by temps warming through the 40s, into the 50s and well above the seasonable norm.

Tonight, expect cloudy skies with tapering snow chances after Midnight and some clearing. Lows will be in the teens with an East/North wind 2-12mph and chills near zero.

Tuesday, we will see partly to mostly cloudy skies with some clearing and slightly warmer temperatures. Highs 36-42 with a North/West wind 5-15mph and chills in the teens and 20s.

Tuesday night expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with in & out clouds and a cool feel. Lows will be in the 20s with a light to moderate wind swinging around to the East and chills in the teens.

Wednesday, expect mostly cloudy skies with another round of scattered light snow. Highs on either side of 40s with an East wind 5-15mph. 40% chance for light snow.

Wednesday night mostly cloudy skies with scattered light mix/snow. Lows in the 20s with a light to moderate wind out of the East and chills in the teens. 50% chance for mix/snow. 1"-2" of new snow possible.

Friday's Weather Blog

11:00pm

Overview
Across the nation we have fallen into a fairly calm weather pattern. The remnants of a low pressure system are fizzling out over the NE U.S. Elsewhere, a broad ridge of high pressure remains anchored over the Gulf Coast states and most of the Northern, Central & Southern Plains. Over the Pacific NW a low pressure system is moving over the West Coast.

Discussion
There is a broad ridge of high pressure that extends over the Northern Plains. This high brought us plenty of sunshine with temps warming into the 50s & 60s. Minot & Bismarck set new record high temps and Williston, Dickinson & Mobridge tied record highs.

If you thought today was very nice, tomorrow will be slightly warmer with another round of temps through the 50s and well into the 60s for most of our area. The warmer weather will be interrupted by a clipper Saturday night. We will see increasing clouds followed by scattered rain/mix as this system moves through the Dakotas. In the wake of our weekend clipper, temps will be in the 40s Sunday. Not as warm as today & Saturday but mild & well above average for this time of the year. There will be some clearing on Sunday, followed by a cold front Sunday night. By Monday morning it will be chilly with temps in the 30s and cooling through the day.

 All together:
Saturday, no jacket but bring an umbrella through the evening and night.
Sunday morning, most of the mix/snow should be cleared out but bring an umbrella just in case & bring a light jacket.
Sunday night, scattered snow and falling temps. Bring a jacket.
Monday morning, bring a jacket and keep it through the day.

Through the rest of tonight & Saturday
Expect fair to partly cloudy skies across with temps cooling through the 30s. Lows will be near freezing for most of the area with a few 20s on the map. Winds start to calm and become light.
Tomorrow we will start the day with plenty of sunshine and temperatures quickly warming through the 40s & 50s. Daytime highs will run well above average with near record breaking temperatures again. Through the evening hours, expect increasing clouds followed by a chance for scattered rain/mix as a clipper moves through the Northern Plains.

7day planner
Temperatures will remain well above average tonight & Saturday. Daytime highs will climb well into the 60s again. Saturday night, a clipper will move through the Dakotas bringing a chance for scattered rain/mix and slightly cooler air. Monday a cold front will move through the area from North to South with a chance for snow, followed by a much cooler air mass. Temperatures will fall into a more seasonable range through the beginning of the work week.

Tonight, expect fair to partly cloudy skies with temps remaining well above average and near freezing. Lows 28-35 with SW wind 2-10mph.

Saturday, we will see mostly sunny skies with a mild feel& increasing clouds, late. Highs 56-65 with a light to moderate wind out of the SW/West. Wind speeds will begin to pick up, late.

Saturday night, expect increasing clouds with a slight chance for AM rain/snow. Lows in the 30s with a West/NW wind 10-20mph as a clipper moves through the Dakotas.

Sunday, skies will begin to clear out early with winds becoming breezy and cooler temps. Highs 44-50 with a NW/W wind 15-25mph & gusty at times.

Sunday night, we will see increasing clouds with a late chance for snow/mix through the morning hours. Lows 26-32 with a light wind out of the West.

Thursday's Weather Blog

Overview
There is a low pressure system moving out of the NE US with a cold front stretched South, over the Atlantic Ocean. This low is leaving a lot of scattered snow in its wake. Elsewhere, a broad ridge of high pressure expands across most of the Gulf Coast states and in the SW US. Closer to home we are seeing partly to mostly cloudy skies with a warm front West of the Dakotas.

Discussion
Through the day we have seen in & out clouds revealing plenty of sunshine across Western ND. Abundant sunshine has lead to another round of unseasonably warm temperatures with winds becoming light & variable. Temperatures today climbed through the 30s and topped out well into the 40s for much of Western ND. the only exceptions were Minot & Garrison.

If you were pleased with today's above average temperatures, the next couple of days will be right up your alley. On the other hand, if you are unsatisfied with the lack of an apparent winter, Friday and Saturday will only increase that feeling. Nevertheless, a warm front to our west will move through the Dakotas tonight. After Midnight, we will see clearing skies from West to East across most of the region. Through the day Friday, there will be some in & out clouds but nothing will stick around for too long. A much warmer air mass will move over our area. WAA (Warm Air Advection) coupled with daytime heating will lead to temperatures climbing into an unseasonably warm range and well into the 50s. Saturday will bring a few more clouds and even warmer temps ranging from the mid to upper 50s through the lower to mid 60s.
In house model guidance (4kmRPM) Saturday PM before daytime highs

This run of increasingly mild temperatures will be interrupted by a weekend clipper that will bring a chance for snow Saturday night followed by cooler temps and gradual clearing to wrap up the weekend.

Through the rest of tonight & Friday
Expect clearing skies, temps falling through the 20s and winds becoming light & variable. It will be cool with temps above the seasonable norm, feeling like it is in the teens.
Through the day tomorrow we will see continued clearing early, followed by plenty of sunshine with in & out light cloud cover. Temperatures will climb through the 40s & into the 50s. Winds will become light to moderate and swing around to the West.

7day planner
A warm front will move through the Dakotas tonight and bring a very mild air mass across the region. Temperatures will climb well into the 50s & 60s, Friday & Saturday. Temps will remain mild and well above average with very little activity on radar and plenty of sunshine. This weekend a clipper system will move through the Northern Plains Saturday night & Sunday. We will see a chance for rain/snow followed by temps falling back into the 30s for highs.

Tonight, expect fair to partly cloudy skies with in & out cover, followed by clearing. Temps will be in the 20s with a few teens and light winds, swinging around to the West 2-12mph.

Friday, we will see plenty of sunshine with a few clouds and a mild feel. Highs 48-59 with a west wind 5-15mph.

Friday night, expect fair to partly cloudy skies with temps remaining well above average and near freezing. Lows 28-35 with a light wind.

Saturday, we will see mostly sunny skies with a mild feel & increasing clouds, late. Highs 56-65 with a light to moderate wind out of the SW/West. Wind speeds will begin to pick up.

Saturday night, expect increasing clouds with a slight chance for AM rain/snow. Lows on either side of freezing with a West/NW wind 10-20mph as a clipper moves through the Dakotas.

Wednesday's Weather Blog

10:00pm

Overview
Across the country, there is a strong low pressure system over the Ohio River valley & NE US. This low is bringing heavy snow to parts of the Great Lakes region and a risk for severe weather to the Mid Atlantic coastline. A weak area of low pressure is over the Dakotas, bringing scattered light snow to our area and there is a stationary front to our West.

Discussion
Through the day we have seen increasing clouds with passing flurries/light snow. A weak low pressure system is over the Dakotas and moving South & SE. There have been a few scattered snow showers moving through Western & Central ND today. Little to no accumulation was expected and so far, we have only seen a dusting at the KX studios with no reports suggesting any more coverage. This afternoon, moderate to strong winds and passing flurries did limit visibility, briefly. This weak system will continue to move South.

To our West there is a stationary front on the western fringe of the Northern Plains. This feature will transition to a warm front and move East, through the region, crossing the Dakotas Thursday night & Friday. So tomorrow, temperatures will remain above average and top out on either side of 40. Friday & Saturday temperatures will be mild and climb through the 50s. All together, this quiet weather pattern will continue with temperatures warming into a very mild range this weekend.

Through the rest of tonight & Thursday
Overnight expect mostly cloudy skies with a few lingering flurries. Snow chances will taper off with little to no accumulation in affected areas. Temperatures will fall through the 20s and winds will begin to calm down. In the wake of this weak system, expect gradually clearing skies with temperatures tomorrow climbing back into a range slightly above average for this time of the year (avg 4/25). Winds Thursday will be light to moderate and out of the NW/West.

7day planner
We will see tapering chances for light snow followed by gradual clearing. Thursday, temps will range through the 30s and reach into the lower 40s for some. Friday a warm front will move through the Dakotas and bring a very mild air mass across the region. Temperatures will climb well into the 50s Friday & Saturday. Some of the model guidance is pointing to daytime highs on Saturday into the 60s. This weekend a cold front will move through bringing a chance for snow followed by temps falling back into the 30s for highs.

Tonight, expect mostly cloudy skies & flurries ending with gradual clearing. Wind speeds will begin to settle down. Lows will be on either side of 20 with NW winds 5-15mph and chills in the teens.

Thursday, we will see continued clearing that leads to mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and plenty of sunshine. Highs 35-42 with a NW/West wind 5-15mph.

Thursday night, expect fair to partly cloudy skies. Temps will be in the 20s with light winds, swinging around to the SW 2-12mph and chills in the teens.

Friday, we will see plenty of sunshine with a few clouds and a mild feel. Highs 47-54 with a west wind 5-15mph.

Friday night, expect fair to partly cloudy skies with temps remaining well above average. Lows 28-35 with a light wind.

Tuesday's Weather Blog

10:30pm

Overview
There is a strong low pressure system over the lower- Mississippi river valley and SE U.S. with a risk for severe weather. Several severe thunderstorm & tornado warnings have been issued as this system moves through gulf coast states. Elsewhere a weak clipper is over NE Montana and a broad ridge of high pressure is over the Central & Northern Plains. This high will continue to build over the Southern Plains in lieu of a departing low.

Discussion
A ridge of high pressure is anchored over the Central Plains and extended over the Northern Plains. This high brought unseasonably warm temps across the Dakotas with plenty of sunshine, today. Though temperatures were nowhere near record breaking, they climbed into a mild range. It felt pleasant across Western ND under mostly sunny skies. Across the area it was also breezy with peak gusts ranging from 25-40mph and making it feel about 10 degrees cooler than it actually was.

During the next 24 hours there will be scattered light snow and flurries moving through North Dakota, resulting in little to no accumulation. The latest in-house model run shows less than one inch across the state with most of Western ND not seeing more than 1/2 inch. Either way, light accumulations (If Any) are possible. If anything the early light snow showers and scattered flurries will keep daytime highs slightly cooler for some areas. However, some clearing is expected through the day and will result in slightly warmer temps for some. All together, we will be looking at temperatures mainly in the 30s. Some locations may even climb into the lower to mid 40s. Either way, temperatures are expected to climb into an above average range again Wednesday with scattered flurries, winds becoming breezy and more cloud cover.

Through the rest of tonight & Wednesday
Overnight we will start off with a cool feel and temps continuing to fall through the 20s. Wind speeds will be tapering off, becoming light & variable. We will begin to see gradually increasing clouds after Midnight and a weak system will move through the area bringing scattered light snow with little to no accumulation expected. In the wake of this weak system we will see two things. 1) Winds will pick back up becoming moderate to strong & gusty and 2) scattered flurries/light snow will continue to affect parts of our area through much of the day. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s and a few areas reaching into the 40s.

7day planner
Winds will become moderate to strong with scattered flurries and some clearing, tomorrow. In the wake of a passing weak clipper, we will see clearing skies Wednesday night & Thursday with calming winds. The later half of our work week will bring warming temperatures and more sunshine. Our next front is not until the weekend. In the wake our weekend front, temps fall into a more seasonable range.

Tonight, expect fair to partly cloudy skies with increasing cover and a chance for scattered light snow, after Midnight. Lows will be in the 20s & upper teens with a North becoming West wind 2-12mph and chills in the teens.

Wednesday, we will see mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance for light snow/mix and winds becoming strong. There will be some clearing and a little sunshine. Highs 35-42 and NW winds 15-25mph G35 with chills in the 20s.

Wednesday night, expect mostly cloudy skies with gradual clearing and still a little breezy. Lows on either side of 20 and NW winds 10-20mph with chills in the teens.

Thursday, we will see mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with continued clearing skies, revealing plenty of sunshine. Highs 35-42 with a NW/North wind 5-15mph.

Thursday night, expect fair to partly cloudy skies. Temps will be in the 20s with a SW wind, swinging around to the West and becoming light and chills in the teens.

Monday's Weather Blog

10:30pm

Overview
There is a weak low pressure system just north of the upper- Midwest & NE North Dakota. A secondary low is over the SE U.S. with showers & thunderstorms continuing to move East. A third low over Texas continues to develop and will become strong, causing severe weather to affected areas.

Discussion
Across the state today, temperatures were well above average and climbed into a mild range (avg 30/11). The warm spot on the map was Minot, topping out at 50. Elsewhere, highs were in the 30s & 40s across North Dakota. Though our temps were this high, no records were broken.

Over the NE corner of our state a low pressure system will remain weak as it continues to affect Eastern, ND. This system will continue to move East and away from our area. This means that there will be some clearing tonight. This same low has a surface trough that extends south through Central, ND. Along and East of this feature, there is scattered light mix/snow. As temperatures continue to fall through the 30s and into the 20s, mix will transition to snow. However, significant accumulation is not expected tonight. West of this same surface trough, winds are moderate and gusty. As this system continues to move East, winds across the state will gradually swing around to the West & NW and become breezy. Through the day tomorrow winds will remain breezy and swing around to the NW. Tuesday night through Wednesday morning there will be a chance for scattered light snow as another weak piece of energy moves through the state. Much like tonight, snow will be hit & miss and significant accumulation is not expected for most of the area. The only difference is that snow chances will be more widespread and accumulations are possible. Nevertheless, less than an inch of new snow is expected through most of Western, ND during the next 48 hours.
In House Model (4km_RPM) Showing Light Snow Wednesday Morning.

Through the mid week, temperatures will top out in the 30s followed by a weak warm front on Friday, briefly bringing highs well into the 40s again. This weekend, more clouds and a cold front will move into play and temperatures will only climb into the 30s again. By Sunday and Monday temps will be closer to where they should be for this time of the year. Over all, expect a relatively quiet weather pattern through most of the work week.

Through the rest of tonight & Tuesday
We will see in & out clouds with a chance for a scattered light mix and a few flurries. Winds will continue to increase from West to East, becoming moderate and a little gusty at times as they swing around to the West & NW. Temperatures will settle in the 20s, feeling like it is in the teens. Through Tuesday we will see some clearing with skies becoming partly cloudy for much of the area. Winds will remain moderate to strong and gusty at times. Clouds will roll back into the area late, in advance of another weak system that will bring scattered light snow.

7day planner
Our short term headlines include slightly cooler temps that will still remain above average for this time of the year, winds becoming breezy through tomorrow & Wednesday and our next chance for light snow will be Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Otherwise, during the next 7days, daytime highs will top out in the 30s & 40s and our next front is not until the weekend. This system will bring a chance for snow and long range models are pointing to a light to moderate accumulation. In the wake our weekend front, temps fall into a more seasonable range.

Tonight, expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with in & out cover and increasing wind speeds. There will be a few scattered flurries/mix passing through our area. Lows will be in the 20s with light winds becoming NW 5-15mph and chills in the teens.

Tuesday, mostly cloudy skies with in & out cover and a few flurries possible. Highs 36-43 and NW winds 10-20mph G27.

Tuesday night, expect mostly cloudy skies with increasing cover and a chance for snow after Midnight. Lows in the 20s with a North becoming West wind 2-12mph and chills in the teens.

Wednesday, we will see mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance for light snow/mix and winds becoming strong. Highs 35-42 and NW winds 15-25mph G35 with chills in the 20s.

Wednesday night, expect mostly cloudy skies with gradual clearing and still a little breezy. Lows on either side of 20 and NW winds 10-20mph with chills in the teens.

Friday's Weather Blog

10:30pm

Overview
There is a low pressure system over the Great Lakes Region that will continue to move East toward the NE U.S. Another low, is over the Pacific NW. This system will bring our next chance for snow.

Discussion
Today we saw spring like conditions with strong winds across the state. Bismarck & Grand Forks saw record breaking highs. Bismarck climbed to 60 degrees. The previous record was 55, set back in 1996. Grand Forks was a little cooler but still broke a record of 42 also set 20 years ago, with a high of 44. Winds were strong through the day and most of our max wind speeds were recorded before sunrise. Peak gusts ranged from 50-60mph across the area.

A low pressure system over the Pacific NW will move East, and redevelop on the lee side of the Rockies. It will move across the Northern Plains, tonight & Saturday. The quick moving clipper will start to affect our area tomorrow morning. Scattered rain/mix/snow will move into the area through the afternoon & evening hours. This low pressure system will continue to bring scattered, light snow through Western ND through Saturday Night & Sunday morning. Most of our area will see less than 1" of new snow with 1-3" possible for some.
In-house Model (4km_RPM) Snowfall Totals
In the wake of this system, temperatures will remain above average for this time of the year, but not as warm as we saw today. The active weather pattern that we have been will calm down with only a couple chances for snow through the next 7 days.

Through the rest of tonight & Saturday
We will see partly to mostly cloudy skies with increasing cover as wind speeds continue to taper off, becoming light to moderate and out of the WNW. There may be a few light showers/mix over parts of Western ND in advance of an approaching clipper. Tomorrow temps will climb into the 40s with a chance for mix/snow as a low moves through the area. Light snow accumulations (if any) are possible.

7day planner
Our headlines include calming winds with weekend snow chances and temperatures remaining above average for this time of the year. A quick moving system will roll through the Dakotas Saturday & Saturday night with parts of the area seeing light accumulations. In the wake of this system, we will see more sunshine next week with temps in the 30s & 40s. A few of the long range models are hinting at a couple other snow chances at during the next 7 days.

Tonight, fair to partly cloudy skies with winds beginning to calm and increasing cover. Lows will be on either side of 30 with 5-15mph winds, swinging around to the West.

Saturday, partly to mostly cloudy skies with continued increasing cover and chance for mix/snow in advance of an approaching cold front. Highs 39-47 with winds swinging around to the North 2-12mph.

Saturday night a weak system will move through the Dakotas with a chance for snow/mix and a light to moderate wind out of the NE. Lows will fall into the 20s with chills in the teens.

Sunday, expect mostly cloudy skies with a few flurries and temperatures in the 30s. Winds will be light to moderate, swinging around to the South.

Sunday night, gradually increasing clouds will reveal fair to partly cloudy skies as temps fall through the 20s. Winds will be light to moderate and out of the South, making it feel like it is in the teens.
