Friday's Weather Blog

7:00pm

Overview
There is a low pressure system over Canada (north of the upper- Midwest) with a warm front stretched south, through the Great Lakes region and into the Central Plains. A broad ridge of high pressure is over the Atlantic coastline and stretched west through the SE U.S. and into the Southern Plains. A second low pressure system will begin to develop over the Central & Northern Plains, on the Lee side of the Rockies.

Discussion
A warm front that moved through our state this morning brought scattered rain to much of Western, ND. Showers were hit & miss and about 1/3 of our area got wet, briefly. In the wake of this weak system we saw skies clear out, temps warm through the 40s and wind speeds pick up. Though temperatures were well above average and mild, no records were broken today.

Overnight, a low pressure system will begin to redevelop on the Lee side of the Rockies. This low will be weak as it passes from the West to the East through the Central & Northern Plains (just south of our area). The next couple of days will bring gradually cooling temps and a chance for some scattered snow. Snow chances will be hit & miss with a lot of cloud cover and any accumulations will be light. In the wake of this front temperatures will gradually fall into a more seasonable range. Sunday & Monday, highs will be in the 30s & 20s with a chance for light scattered snow. By Tuesday temps will be back to normal for this time of the year.

Through the rest of tonight & Friday
Expect increasing clouds with continued mild temperatures. Temps will continue to fall and settle in the mid to upper 20s and lower 30s for overnight lows. Winds will be light to moderate and out of the West (continuing to calm down). It will feel 5-10 degrees cooler than it is. Tomorrow, our weekend will start off with more clouds and cooler temps. Though temps will still be well above average, it will feel cooler than today's highs. Scattered snow will not affect everyone and accumulations will be light.

 7day planner
A weak system will continue to move out of the Dakotas and into the Great Lakes region as temps fall to near/below the freezing mark, tonight. Some light scattered snow/mix will move through parts of Western, ND tomorrow.  Sunday & Monday we will see mostly cloudy skies with some clearing and a few scattered flurries possible as temperatures gradually fall. Through the beginning of the work week, temps will continue fall back to a more normal range for the beginning of February.

TONIGHT...Fair to partly cloudy skies with increasing clouds late and a chance for scattered rain/mix. Lows 25-33. West wind 5-15mph. Chills in the teens & 20s.
SATURDAY...Mostly cloudy skies with continued increasing cover and a low chance for scattered mix becoming snow as temps fall to near freezing through the evening hours. Highs 37-44. 30% chance for mix/snow.
SATURDAY NIGHT...Mostly cloudy skies with a chance for scattered flurries. Lows 21-28. West/NW wind 2-12mph. Chills in the teens.
SUNDAY... Mostly cloudy skies with some clearing and falling temperatures. There will be a chance for scattered light snow. Highs 30-36. NW wind 5-15mph.
SUNDAY NIGHT... Mostly to partly cloudy skies with in & out clouds and a chance for light scattered snow tapering off. Lows on either side of 20. Light NW winds. Chills in the teens.

Thursday's Weather Blog

7:30pm

Overview
There is a weak low pressure system that is moving toward the NE U.S. with a cold front stretched back through the Midwest and into the Northern Plains. A developing clipper system is just north of the Dakotas with a trough stretched SW across Montana. Elsewhere, a broad ridge of high pressure is over the Central & Southern plains and expanded over the SE U.S.

Discussion
Across our area today, we saw another round of mild conditions with temperatures that climbed well into the lower to mid 40s. This unseasonably warm trend will continue tonight & tomorrow. Although we didn't see any record breaking high temperatures across the state, Dickinson warmed to 45 which is today's 3rd warmest high (record 53/1992). Across the western half of North Dakota, temperatures topped out in the 40s. There were even a few lower 50s in the SW corner of our viewing area.

A clipper system to our north will move through and affect our area tonight & tomorrow. This system will bring a chance for scattered rain starting through the early morning hours. Before sunrise, scattered showers will begin to move into the Dakotas and continue through the midday hours, Friday. Most of our temperatures at this time will be above the freezing mark, causing rain. A few isolated areas could see a wintry mix. This scattered rain is expected to move across the state, but not everyone will get wet. Another low will begin to develop over the Central plains and move West to East (South of our area). Scattered snow will move through Western, ND with light accumulations expected, at this point.

Through the rest of tonight & Friday
We will see in & out clouds with a chance for rain after Midnight, closer to sunrise. There will be a few scattered showers/mix. Temperatures will not fall much and overnight lows will range through the 30s with a few areas seeing min temps near the freezing mark. Tomorrow, warming begins early with temps climbing back into an unseasonably warm & mild range. The chance for scattered rain will wrap up during the midday & afternoon hours. In the wake of this weak system, expect clearing skies and increasing wind speeds. Moderate to strong winds will accompany temps in the  40s.

 7day planner
In the short term, mild temps will continue with a chance for scattered rain/mix as a weak system moves through the area early Friday morning & afternoon. Saturday, there will be a chance for light, scattered snow. Sunday & Monday colder air will move over the Dakotas and temperatures will gradually fall into a more seasonable range through the beginning of the work week. By Tuesday & Wednesday Highs will be near 20 and lows will be in the teens and near the single digits, again.

TONIGHT...Increasing clouds with temps falling to near freezing. Lows 28-36. South/West wind 2-12mph. Chills in the teens & 20s.
FRIDAY...Mostly cloudy skies with an early chance for scattered rain/wintry mix, followed by clearing skies and continued mild temps. Wind speeds will increase as skies clear out. Highs 40-50. West wind 15-25mph G35. 30% chance for rain/mix.
FRIDAY NIGHT...Fair to partly cloudy skies with increasing clouds, late. Lows 24-31. West wind 5-15mph. Chills in the teens.
SATURDAY...Mostly cloudy skies with continued increasing cover and a chance for scattered rain/mix becoming snow as temps fall to near freezing through the evening hours. Highs 37-43. 30% chance for mix/snow.
SATURDAY NIGHT...Cloudy skies with a chance for scattered flurries tapering off. Lows in the 20s. Light to moderate West/NW wind. Chills in the teens.
3 of the last 4 years, highs were above average in Bismarck/Mandan
Today was the 3rd warmest high for Dickinson

Wednesday's Weather Blog

7:00pm

Overview
There is a quick moving low pressure system over the Great Lakes region. Elsewhere a ridge of high pressure is anchored over the Central & Northern Plains. A slow moving front that is stretched NE/SW along the East Coast will continue to fizzle out as it moves East, over the Atlantic Ocean.

Discussion
Temperatures climbed into an unseasonably warm range with highs well into the 40s across most of the state, today. Warm temps allowed for the snowpack to melt a bit. Temps tonight will fall into the 20s and a refreeze is expected. Watch for patchy ice tonight and tomorrow.
A broad ridge of high pressure will remain anchored over the plains through tonight & tomorrow. This ridging will continue to bring mild temps to the area with a mixture of sunshine & cloud cover. Late Thursday through early Friday another clipper will move through the Dakotas. This system will bring increasing clouds and scattered rain through our state. During
the later half of Friday morning, we will see clearing skies and increasing wind speeds. This active weather pattern will continue into the weekend before temps start to cool down.

Through the rest of tonight & Thursday
Expect fair to partly cloudy skies with above average temperatures cooling through the 30s and into the mid- upper 20s. Parts of Western, ND could see a few 30s for lows. Winds will remain moderate and out of the Nw. Thursday will bring mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with more clouds moving through the area during the day. Temperatures will bounce back into the upper 30s & lower to mid 40s with a light to moderate wind swinging around to the south.

 7day planner
Through the end of the work week, expect mild temperatures with an active weather pattern. By this weekend, a weak cold front will move through the Dakotas with a chance for scattered snow. Temperatures will then fall through the 30s. Through the beginning of the work week, temperatures will return to a more seasonable range with a sun/cloud mix.
TONIGHT...Fair to partly cloudy skies with winds beginning to calm down. Lows 23-31. NW/West wind 5-15mph. Chills in the teens.
THURSDAY...Mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and mild. Highs 34-45. West/South wind 2-12mph.
THURSDAY NIGHT...Increasing clouds with temps falling to near freezing. Lows 28-34. SW/West wind 5-15mph. Chills in the teens & 20s.
FRIDAY...Mostly cloudy skies with a chance for scattered rain/wintry mix, followed by clearing skies and continued mild temps. Highs 38-46. West wind 15-25mph G32.
FRIDAY NIGHT...Partly cloudy skies with in & out cover. Lows 24-30. Light to moderate wind out of the West.

Tuesday's Weather Blog

Overview
There is a low pressure system over the NE U.S. with a cold front stretched south along the Atlantic Seaboard. A secondary low over the NW Gulf of Mexico will continue to develop and strengthen. There is a broad ridge of high pressure that stretches through most of the Plains. Just north of the Dakotas a low pressure system has a weakened warm front/trough stretched south, into Montana.

Discussion
Through the afternoon & evening hours, skies continued to clear out and temps climbed into an above average range. Daytime highs topped out in the 20s & 30s across much of the area.
As of 7pm skies were mostly clear across Western, ND with a trough & more wide-spread cloud cover to our West over Montana. This weak front & cloud cover will continue to move East and over the Dakotas. Through the early morning hours, expect a chance for a few scattered flurries/mix (mainly through and east of north/central ND). This front will move through quickly. By the late morning & midday hours, expect clearing skies and increasing winds as they swing around to the NW. In the wake of this front, a warmer air mass will move over the Dakotas, bringing temps even further above the seasonable average (3/24). Mild temps will remain in our forecast with a sun/cloud mix until the end of our work week. Other than a chance for scattered flurries/mix tonight, our next chance for precip will be Friday as another weak (cold) front moves through the Northern Plains. By this weekend daytime high temps will be slightly cooler than and in the 30s.

Through the rest of tonight & Wednesday
Overnight, expect increasing clouds with skies becoming mostly cloudy, again. Lows will occur early in our planner. A weak front will move through and bring scattered flurries/wintry mix. After Midnight warmer air will begin to bring temperatures up (from the west to the east). By sunrise, temps will be in the 20s & 30s and continue to warm through the day. By the late morning and midday hours skies will begin to clear out and winds will pick up, becoming moderate to strong and out of the NW.

 7day planner
A warm front will move through the area tonight and bring a chance for scattered flurries/mix. In the wake of this front, temps will rise into a mild range through the next couple of days. A late-week cold front will move through the Dakotas Friday/Saturday and bring a chance for snow/rain as we go into the weekend. This weak cold front will bring temps down a bit (30s for highs & 20s for lows). Temps will fall into a more seasonable range for the beginning of the work week.

TONIGHT...Partly to mostly cloudy skies with a chance for scattered flurries/wintry mix and warming temps. Lows 16-24. SW/West wind 2-12mph. Chills in the teens.
WEDNESDAY... Partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies with in & out cover and temps climbing well above average and into a mild range. Highs 37-45. West wind 15-25mph G30-40mph.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT...Fair to partly cloudy skies with winds beginning to calm down. Lows 23-29. NW/West wind 5-15mph.
THURSDAY...Mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and mild. Highs 37-43. West/South wind 2-12mph.
THURSDAY NIGHT...Increasing clouds with temps near freezing. Lows 26-33. Light to moderate wind out of the SW. Chills in the teens & 20s.

Monday's Weather Blog

7:00pm

Overview
There is a low pressure system over the Midwest with a cold front stretched along the Mississippi River valley and into the SE U.S. & Southern Plains. A ridge of high pressure extends into the Northern Plains and a warmer air mass is moving toward the Dakotas.

Discussion
Today, temperatures climbed into the upper 20s & lower 30s with mostly cloudy skies, a few areas of clearing and NW winds that became gusty at times. These conditions will last through tomorrow before another round of mild temps returns into our forecast. Overnight, we will see some fog develop with patchy freezing drizzle/wintry mix. There will also be a chance for light snow/mix Wednesday morning as a weak system moves through North Dakota. Otherwise, expect low precip chances. In the wake of a weak system (Wednesday morning) skies will begin to clear with temperatures warming into an unseasonable (avg 24/3) & mild range through the end of the work week. This clipper system will cause increasing winds (late Tuesday), bring a chance for scattered snow/wintry mix (Wednesday morning) and usher warmer air into the Dakotas in its wake.  Wednesday through Friday, daytime highs will be near/above 40 degrees.

Through the rest of tonight & Tuesday
Cloudy skies will continue through most of the night and temperatures will remain near or above 20s until after Midnight. Areas of fog will begin to develop during the next several hours. Though widespread (dense) fog is not expected, some patchy dense fog is possible. There will also be a chance for areas of freezing drizzle/mix through tonight. By tomorrow a low level west wind will assist in clearing out lingering fog and widespread clouds through the morning hours. After Noon, expect a sun/cloud mix with temperatures climbing well into the 20s again and daytime highs topping out on either side of 30s across Western, ND.

 7day planner
Overnight we will see areas of fog with a chance for freezing drizzle/flurries. In the wake of a weak clipper, temps will warm and become mild with low precip chances through the rest of the work week. High temperatures will climb to either side of 40 with above average temps remaining the theme. By the weekend, temps will begin to fall through the 30s with long- range models hinting at our next front.

TONIGHT...Mostly cloudy to overcast skies with patchy fog developing and a light freezing drizzle/flurries possible. Lows 14-21. NW wind 5-15mph. Chills in the teens & single digits.
TUESDAY...Patchy fog early with freezing drizzle/flurries possible. Otherwise mostly clouds with some clearing revealing partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies. Highs 23-32. NW/SW wind 2-12mph. Chills in the teens.
TUESDAY NIGHT...Partly to mostly cloudy skies with in & out clouds. Lows 16-23. SW/West wind 2-10mph.
Lows in the 20s. Moderate wind out of the NW.

Friday's Weather Blog

7:00pm

Overview
There is a strong low pressure system over the SE U.S. that will continue to move up the Atlantic Coastline. Closer to home, a low pressure system is over Canada (North of Montana) with a cold front stretched South over parts of Western, ND.

Discussion
This evening and into tonight, a moderate wind will lead to the potential for patchy blowing/drifting snow through parts of Central ND (around Steele & Jamestown). Otherwise, a warm front will continue to move through the Dakotas tonight & Saturday. Temperatures will climb through the 30s with daytime highs on either side of 40 across Western, ND. The Eastern half of our state will be a little cooler. This warm up will be brief and last through the day & evening Saturday. By Sunday a weak cold front will move through the Dakotas. This front will bring a couple changes to our headlines. Sunday & Monday there will be a chance for scattered snow resulting in light accumulations. Most of our area will see 1 inch or less with 1-2 inches possible. In the wake of this weak front, temps will fall into a more seasonable range with lows in the teens and highs in the 20s for a couple of days.

On the other side of the nation, there is a strong low pressure system over the Atlantic seaboard in the SE U.S. This Nor'easter will continue to move NNE and bring a lot of snow to affected areas. There will be widespread accumulations of 1-2 feet of new snow. Some locations will see 2-3 feet of new snowfall. A series of Blizzard & Winter Storm Warnings will remain in effect across much of the Mid- Atlantic through this event.
Model Guidance (RPM)

Through the rest of tonight & Saturday
Expect developing fog/haze that will become patchy through the overnight hours. In areas of fog, light freezing drizzle/freezing fog will occur. Otherwise, cloudy skies will continue through the overnight hours with gradual clearing for parts of Western, ND. Overnight temps will not cool much as a warmer air mass to our west continues to move into the Dakotas. Tomorrow, expect a pleasant feel as temps warm through the day before topping out in the upper 30s & lower 40s.Winds will be light to moderate and a little gusty at times with skies becoming partly cloudy to mostly sunny for much of the area.

 7day planner
Expect warming temps with some clearing as we go into the Weekend. Tomorrow will bring a mild feel, followed by increasing clouds overnight. Sunday & Monday a weak cold front will move through the Dakotas. This front will bring our next chance for snow with cooler & more seasonable temps through the beginning of the work week. On Wednesday, a warm front will move through our area and bring with it a second chance for light snow and another round of mild temps to wrap up the work week.

TONIGHT...Partly to mostly cloudy skies with more clearing. Lows in the 20s & the lower 30s. South wind 5-15mph G20. Chills in the teens.

Thursday's Weather Blog

7:00pm

Overview
There is a strong low pressure system over the lower- Mississippi River valley and SE U.S. This system will continue to move East before turning NNE and moving up the Atlantic coastline. Closer to home a weak low over Canada (north of Idaho/Montana) will slowly move East. An associated warm front is currently west of the Dakotas.

Discussion
Today we started off with patchy dense fog, cloudy skies and scattered snow. Temperatures climbed into the upper teens and lower 20s across most of Western, ND. After Noon, skies began to clear out a bit. A warm front to our West will be our next weather-changer. This front will gradually move East, bringing a mild air mass through most of North Dakota. During the next couple of days temperatures will warm through the 20s & 30s. By Saturday upper 30s and lower to mid 40s are expected. The approach of a weak cold front will bring scattered snow chances Sunday through Monday morning. Snow chances Sunday/Monday will add up to light accumulations in Western, ND.

Elsewhere, a strong low pressure system over the SE U.S. will continue to develop and begin to move up the Atlantic coastline Friday & Saturday. This system will bring widespread heavy snow to the Mid- Atlantic and into the NE. 1-2 feet of new snow is expected in affected areas with 2-3 feet possible for some.

Through the rest of tonight & Friday
Tonight we will see some clearing as temps fall into the single digits and teens. Parts of Western, ND will see another round of patchy fog as winds become calm. Tomorrow morning, expect in & out clouds with temps warming through the teens & 20s before topping out in the mid to upper 20s & lower 30s. Winds will pick up as they swing around to the South, becoming gusty at times.

 7day planner
Expect a warming trend with low snow chances to wrap up the work week. Temperatures will climb through the 20s & 30s and into the 40s by Saturday. This brief stent of mild temps will be interrupted by a weak cold front Sunday/Monday. The beginning of the work week will bring lows in the teens and highs in the 20s with only a couple chances for light snow during the next 7days.

TONIGHT...Mostly cloudy skies with some clearing and temps becoming a little cooler. Lows 5-12. NW/SE winds 2-10mph. Chills below zero.

Wednesday's Weather Blog

7:00pm

Overview
There is a weak low pressure system over the Northern Plains (just south of Western, North Dakota). A weak front is stretched west over Montana and into Canada. A secondary low is developing over the Central & Southern plains. An old cold front is stretches South, along the Atlantic Coast & through the SE U.S. This front will become stationary before fizzling out.

Discussion
A weak low pressure system (over South Dakota) is associated with a cold front stretched West & NW through Montana and into Canada. This front will continue to weaken before transitioning into a stationary front and stalling out. This feature was the cause of cloudy skies, cool temps and early (widespread) fog, today. The next 24 hours will be similar to what we saw today. Patchy dense fog will develop across parts of Western, ND tonight with some freezing drizzle & freezing fog possible. Additionally there will be a chance for scattered snow/flurries lasting into Thursday. Areas affected will see less than one inch. During the next couple of days, the biggest headline in weather will include temps warming into a mild range Friday & Saturday.

On the other side of the nation, a low will develop over the Central Plains and move through the SE U.S. producing a risk for severe weather. Friday & Saturday, this low will move up the Atlantic Coastline and bring a lot of snow to affected areas. By Saturday night, snowfall totals around Washington D.C. are forecast at 1-2 feet of new snow. A range from 2-3 feet is possible (model guidance ranges from 20"-40" in D.C. by Saturday night). It is important to note that is this system tracks a little different (east or west) accumulations will be much different

Through the rest of tonight & Thursday
Expect developing fog to become patchy and dense for some. Scattered, light snow/flurries will move into the area and last through the morning hours. Not everyone will see accumulating snow and totals will be less than 1". Temps will be cool and in the teens through most of tonight. We will start tomorrow off with patchy, dense fog that will lift up and burn off through the midday hours. Otherwise, scattered light snow/flurries will move through the area before we start to see some clearing. Temps will climb into the 20s and winds will be out of the NW.

 7day planner
Another round of fog is expected and will become dense for some with cool temps and light snow as we go into tomorrow. Warming temps will climb into a mild range by Saturday and there will only be a few chances for light snow on the 7day planner (tonight/Thursday & Sunday night/Monday). Otherwise, the beginning of the work week will bring highs in the 20s and lows in the teens.

TONIGHT...Mostly cloudy skies with developing fog becoming widespread and dense for some. There will be a chance for scattered snow/flurries. Lows in the teens. NE/North wind 2-10mph. Chills in the single digits. 10% chance for snow.
THURSDAY...Early fog before 11am with mostly cloudy skies scattered snow as a weak cold front moves through the area. North/NW wind 2-12mph. Chills in the teens. 40% chance for snow.
THURSDAY NIGHT...Partly to mostly cloudy skies with some clearing and a little cooler. Lows in the single digits. Light winds swinging around to the South. Chills below zero.
FRIDAY...Continued clearing revealing mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and warmer temps. Highs 23-29. south wind 10-20mph & gusty.
FRIDAY NIGHT...Partly cloudy skies with in & out clouds. Lows 15-21. South wind 5-15mph. chills in the single digits.
